Abstract

The make-buy decision is a scenario whereby an organization will determine whether to outsource or internally produce a given product. Traditionally automotive manufacturers tend to use experience and internal organizational discussions as opposed to a scientific framework to make a final decision when confronted by a make or buy scenario. Through the research conducted the main influencing factors on the make-buy decision were identified, along with each factor respective sub-criteria. The literature review further found the Analytical hierarchy process method (AHP) was the optimal decision-making technique to use in development of the make-buy decision framework. The investigation culminated in a proposed make-buy decision making framework for use during the new product introduction (NPI) process, within the automotive manufacturing environment. This framework provides a structured approach to the make-buy decision making scenario.
