Abstract
Attempts to determine emplacement ages of kimberlites are reported, using groundmass mineral with high U content (notably perovskite) and whole-rock kimberlites. U/Pb ratios in groundmass perovskite can be two orders of magnitude greater than in the rest of the material, thus enabling U/Pb dating of younger kimberlites (approx 100 m.y.). In older kimberlites, the U/Pb ages obtained were mostly incompatible with geological constraints and results by other methods, but for such kimberlites Pb/Pb systematics yielded realistic age limits in some cases.440R.A.H. Isotope Geoscience is announced in its editorial as a new journal but this first issue is also labelled as Chemical Geology, vol. 41, no. 1. It will initially be published in quarterly issues as a 'daughter' to Chemical Geology and will form an integral part of a subscription to the latter.
