UJ is a research-intensive university hosting 70 Research Centres and Institutes (including a DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence), 26 Research and Innovation Chairs (including SARChI, Industry and UNESCO Chairs), as well as various Centres of Excellence, Technology Stations and Flagship Research Institutes. UJ's seven Faculties, College of Business and Economics and the Johannesburg Business School (JBS) are also home to 335 National Research Foundation (NRF) rated researchers.

As of 2024, UJ is:
