      Description

University of Johannesburg has one Sport Science Lab and two Biokinetics Clinics with the central hub for these services located on the Doornfontein Campus. An additional Biokinetics Clinic can be found on the Bunting Road Campus in Auckland Park. Each facility is student-centred with a large focus on work-integrated learning, prevention of injuries, conditioning of athletes, wellness and orthopaedic and chronic disease rehabilitation.

The Sport Science Lab is centred around athlete development and conditioning. Our Sport Scientists use exercise as a modality to ensure that athletes are prepared physically for competition as well as avoidance of injuries.

Biokinetics focuses on rehabilitation through movement which improves a person’s physical wellbeing and quality of life. The individualised scientific assessment and prescription of rehabilitative exercise aim to prevent, treat or manage certain ailments and injuries as well as enhance physical performance.

Our Biokinetic Clinics treat a wide variety of patients including:

      Orthopaedic injuries (Joint and Muscle)
      Neurological disorders (Parkinson’s disease/stroke)
      Lower back pain
      Impaired physical wellness
Chronic health conditions (e.g. Diabetes/Heart disease)
      Sport injuries
      Obesity
      Low muscle tone
Health risk factors e.g. Hypertension, Elevated cholesterol and Arthritis

The clinics are equipped with state of the art equipment including a Gait re-training treadmill, balance plate, Cybex, Biodex (isokinetic testing) machines, Moto-Med* and the Auckland Park Bunting (APB) Clinic also offers aquatic therapy. The Biodex treadmill* uses audio cueing and visual biofeedback stimulus to improve gait training for improved sensory enrichment thus facilitates patients becoming better, faster. The Biodex Balance System is used to meet the needs of patients looking to improve balance, increase agility and develop muscle. The Cybex and Biodex* testing and rehabilitation machines are useful for dynamic and static neuromuscular loading. Various testing and training programs have been scientifically formulated to load various joints (knee, ankle, hip, shoulder, wrist and elbow), which can be used to assess absolute muscle strength. The Cybex provides immediate biofeedback which can be analysed and shared with physicians. The Moto-Med* is an intelligent motor aided therapy device that can detect and relieve muscle spasms. This piece of equipment is beneficial for neurological, orthopaedic and wheel-chair bound patients. It has both active and passive functions; facilitates neurological stimulation; relaxation; provides visual biofeedback on symmetry, speed, muscle tone and power output. Our clinics also offer Postural and Biomechanical assessments, Body composition measurements, ECG, and lung function tests*. *Note, not all equipment and testing is available at both clinics.

The rehabilitation pool at the APB campus offers easy access with graded steps and a sloping floor including two plunge areas measuring at 1,8m and 2m deep for deep water rehabilitation. The pool’s temperature is maintained between 32̊-34̊ C with a salt chlorinated filtration system which is gentle on skin.
